How to Download Instagram Reels

The 30-second version

Every method on this page reduces to the same four moves, so if you are in a hurry, this is all you need:

1. Open the Reel. It must be public, because content from private accounts cannot be fetched by any external tool.
2. Copy the link. Share icon → Copy link, or copy the address bar on desktop.
3. Paste it into the downloader. The box at the top of our home page.
4. Save the MP4. Choose 1080p for quality or 720p to save mobile data.

Instagram Reels download on Android

Android is the most forgiving platform for this task because its browsers have a real download manager and the file system is directly accessible.

From the Instagram app

1. Open Instagram and navigate to the Reel. You can reach it from the Reels tab, from a profile grid, or from a link someone sent you.
2. On the right-hand action column, tap the paper-plane share icon (it sits below the comment bubble).
3. In the sheet that slides up, tap Copy link. Android shows a brief “Link copied to clipboard” toast.
4. Open Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet or whichever browser you prefer, and go to reelsdownloader.org.
5. Long-press the input box and tap Paste, then tap Download.
6. Choose your quality. The browser download begins immediately; you will see it in the notification shade.

Where the file goes

The MP4 is written to /storage/emulated/0/Download/, which every file manager shows simply as Downloads. Android’s media scanner normally indexes it within a minute, after which it also appears in Google Photos and your Gallery app. If it does not appear in the Gallery, opening it once from a file manager usually forces the scan.

Instagram Reels download on iPhone and iPad

iOS works perfectly well, but it adds one extra step that confuses a lot of people: Safari saves downloads into the Files app rather than into Photos. Nothing has gone wrong when this happens. You just have to move the file across yourself.

1. Open the Reel in the Instagram app, tap the paper-plane share icon and choose Copy link.
2. Switch to Safari and open reelsdownloader.org.
3. Tap the input box, then tap Paste in the small popover iOS shows above the keyboard.
4. Tap Download, then pick a quality.
5. Safari asks “Do you want to download ‘reel.mp4’?” - tap Download. A blue progress arrow appears next to the address bar.
6. Open the Files app → On My iPhone → Downloads.
7. Tap the MP4 to check it plays, then tap the share icon and choose Save Video. It is now in your camera roll.

If you would rather skip the Files detour every time, change Safari’s download location once: Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads, and pick a folder you use often. Note that iOS still will not write directly into Photos from Safari, so the Save Video step remains.

Using Chrome or Firefox on iOS

Both work, and both use the same iOS download plumbing underneath, so the file still lands in Files. Chrome for iOS additionally offers Open in… straight after the download, which can be a quicker route into Photos.

Instagram Reel download on Windows, Mac and Linux

Desktop is the easiest of all, because you can get the link without the mobile app.

1. Go to instagram.com in any browser and open the Reel. You do not need to log in for a public post, although Instagram may show a login prompt overlay. Dismiss it with the × or press Esc.
2. Copy the full address from the address bar. It looks like https://www.instagram.com/reel/ABC123xyz/.
3. Open reelsdownloader.org in a second tab, paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on macOS) and press Enter.
4. Choose a quality; the file saves to your default Downloads folder.

On Windows that is C:\Users\<you>\Downloads; on macOS and Linux it is ~/Downloads. If your browser is set to ask where to save each file, you will get a normal save dialog instead.

Understanding the Instagram Reels download link

Most failed downloads come down to the wrong kind of link being pasted, so it is worth knowing what a valid one looks like.

Links copied from the share sheet often carry a trailing query string such as ?igsh=…. That is a harmless share-tracking parameter and you can paste the link with it intact; we ignore everything after the post code. What you must not do is paste a partial link. If the copy was interrupted, the post code will be missing and nothing can be resolved.

Choosing the right quality for your Reels video download

When more than one rendition is available you will be offered a choice. The right answer depends on what you are going to do with the file:

• Archiving your own work, or any use where the video may be re-edited: always take the highest available rendition. Every re-encode after this point loses detail, so start from the best source you can get.
• Watching offline on a phone: 720p is visually almost identical on a six-inch screen and uses roughly half the storage and half the data.
• Sending over a messaging app: take 720p, because most messengers will re-compress anything larger anyway.

Troubleshooting failed downloads

“This Reel could not be found”

The post is private, deleted, age-restricted, or geo-blocked in your region. Open the link in a private browsing window while logged out: if you cannot see the Reel there, neither can we.

Nothing happens when I press Download

Usually an ad blocker or privacy extension blocking the request. Try disabling extensions for this site, or use a private window. Corporate and school networks sometimes block the Instagram media CDN outright, in which case switching to mobile data resolves it.

The file downloads but will not play

Check the file size first. A file of a few kilobytes is an error page, not a video. If the size looks right but your player refuses it, try VLC, which handles far more container and codec variations than the built-in players on Windows and Android.

The video has no sound

Some Reels genuinely have a silent track, particularly where licensed music was stripped for your region. Confirm by playing the original in the app with your volume up. If the original has audio and the download does not, send us the link through the contact form.

The download is very slow

Throughput here is dictated by Instagram’s CDN and your own connection, not by us; we do not proxy the media through a bottleneck. A slow download on one network is often instant on another.

What you may actually do with the file

Downloading is a technical act; what follows is a legal one. The file you now hold is still the creator’s copyrighted work unless you made it yourself.

• Fine: watching it offline, keeping a copy of your own Reels, saving content you have been given permission to use.
• Not fine: re-uploading it to your own account, using it in paid advertising, or including it in monetised compilations without a licence.
• Never: attempting to access private content, or redistributing anything a creator has asked you to take down.
