GIF or short video?
Pinterest stores animated pins in two ways. Uploaded GIFs stay .gif files, and this Pinterest GIF downloader saves them as they are. Clips uploaded as video are MP4 pins and save as MP4. There is no Pinterest GIF to MP4 conversion here; you get the file the pin really holds.
Hidden behind a still preview
The Pinterest app often shows a GIF pin as a still JPG until you tap it, which is why saving from the app gives you a flat picture. We look up the animated .gif behind that preview and hand you that file instead.
When the GIF will not play

Why does my iPhone show the GIF as a still image?
The Photos app sometimes shows only the first frame of a GIF. The file is fine: open it from the Files app, or send it in a chat, and it animates.
Can I paste a pin.it link to a GIF?
Yes. The short link from the Share menu leads to the GIF pin, and the .gif is fetched from there.
Can I download GIFs saved on a secret board?
No. A GIF on a secret board is visible only to the board's members, so it cannot be read here. Public GIF pins work, and so do GIFs on public boards.
Where is the GIF saved on my phone?
On Android it goes to Downloads and shows in Gallery, where it animates. On iPhone and iPad, Safari saves it to Files under Downloads; share it straight from there to keep the animation.
Can I share a GIF I downloaded from Pinterest?
Sending a GIF in a chat for fun is how most people use them. Re-uploading it as your own, or using it in marketing without the creator's permission, can break copyright law and Pinterest's terms.
Can I download a Pinterest GIF as MP4?
Not as a conversion. GIF pins save as .gif files. Some animated pins are really short video clips, and those save as MP4, with an MP3 button when they have sound. The result card tells you which one you have before you download.
Why did I get a JPG instead of a GIF?
The pin you pasted is a still photo, so there is no .gif behind it. If it moves on Pinterest but still comes back as a JPG, check that you copied the link of that exact pin and not a board or a related pin below it.
Why is the GIF file so large?
GIF stores every frame as a full picture with weak compression, so a few seconds of animation can run to several megabytes. We do not shrink it, so it looks exactly like the original.
